How Malay odds work

Malay odds are the default at most Asian sportsbooks, and they are the format people find most confusing, because they can be positive or negative.

  • Positive Malay odds (0 to 1): the amount you win for each ringgit you bet. At +0.80, a MYR 100 bet wins MYR 80.
  • Negative Malay odds (-1 to 0): the amount you risk to win one ringgit. At -0.80, you risk MYR 80 to win MYR 100. The book shows your bet as MYR 100 but only takes MYR 80 if you lose.

Positive and negative Malay odds meet at 1.00, which is an even-money bet (decimal 2.00). A negative number closer to zero, like -0.50, is better for you than -0.90: you risk less for the same win.

How the other formats relate

  • Hong Kong odds are your profit per ringgit, always positive. HK 0.80 wins MYR 80 on MYR 100. HK = decimal minus 1.
  • Indo odds are HK odds written differently below 1.00: HK 0.80 becomes Indo -1.25 (you risk MYR 125 to win MYR 100).
  • Decimal odds include your stake. Decimal 1.80 returns MYR 180 on MYR 100, which is MYR 80 profit.
  • Implied chance is 1 divided by the decimal odds. Decimal 2.00 means the book prices it at 50%.

Mix parlays: why they pay so well

The combined odds are every leg's decimal odds multiplied together, so three legs at around 1.90 each pay close to 7 times your stake. The catch is that every leg must win, and the bookmaker's margin is multiplied too. That is why parlays are fun for small stakes and a poor way to bet big money.

A few books have special parlay rules, like paying out if one leg is a draw or refunding a half-lost handicap. Check the terms at your sportsbook. Several casinos we review run proper Asian sportsbooks, including BK8 (SBOBET, CMD368, Saba) and 811C (WBet, M8Bet).

Frequently asked questions

How do Malay odds work?

Positive Malay odds (0 to 1) are what you win per ringgit bet: +0.80 wins MYR 80 on MYR 100. Negative Malay odds (-1 to 0) are what you risk to win one ringgit: -0.80 means risking MYR 80 to win MYR 100.

How do I convert Malay odds to decimal?

For positive Malay odds, add 1: +0.80 is decimal 1.80. For negative Malay odds, decimal = 1 + 1 divided by the odds without the minus sign: -0.80 is 1 + 1.25 = decimal 2.25.

What is the difference between HK and Malay odds?

They are the same up to 1.00. Above that, Malay odds switch to negative numbers: HK 1.25 is Malay -0.80. HK odds stay positive and always show your profit per ringgit.

How is a mix parlay calculated?

Multiply the decimal odds of every leg, then multiply by your stake. Three legs at 1.90, 1.85 and 2.05 give combined odds of about 7.21, so MYR 10 returns about MYR 72 if all three win.

What is a bookmaker margin?

It is the bookmaker's built-in edge. On a fair two-way market the implied chances add up to 100%; the amount over 100% is the margin. A lower margin means better prices for you.
